Pirelli P4 or Michelin Defender?

Given that it is almost summer, that means it is time to take my winter tires off. Costco had a deal on some Michelin Defenders, and quoted me around $530 for four. I also noticed that they had some Pirelli P4s for ~$95/tire (plus mounting/balancing). Tire rack reviews seem reasonable. Is there any reason I shouldn't go for them vs. something else?

These seem like they're both just regular old tires. Is there any reason you only want regular old tires? Is this on some regular old car?

It's a pretty regular old car - a 2001 Civic. I'm just looking for something that is available in Canada that isn't too pricey and will last a little while.

I put the Michelin on my W123 Merc and my commuter Honda, it really made the cars handling better in the rain. They are really great tires and the tire shop I go to said they were better, they also said never trust Costco! He said some interesting things have happened to people who went there. I just had them mount my Zs Enkeis and Toyo tires. They do very high end stuff so I trust their opinion. So far I couldn't be happier with these tires on the two cars I have.

As said before, both are pretty standard touring tires. I got a set of Pirelli P4s for my Mercedes 190D and have been completely happy. They are great in the wet weather we get in the Northwest, and have almost no visible wear on them after ~15k miles. But I would not expect a lot from them in terms of performance driving...which is not an issue with my 72 HP Merc.

The Michelins are better, but either will suit you just fine.

I had the Defenders on my Forester and they were great. They had a crazy 90k mile warranty too. I have Pirellis on my Abarth and they make lots of noise on the freeway.
